CLEP is the most widely accepted credit-by-examination program in the country. There are 33 different computer-based examinations in five subject areas. Passing an exam can allow you to earn up to 12 credits. The amount of credit you can earn varies with each college. CLEP Registration Process
Register to take a CLEP Exam by creating an account with CLEP.
After creating an account, you will be able to purchase the exam you wish to take and pay the $80 exam fee to CLEP.
Contact the Academic Testing Center (ATC) at (701)858-3830 or email@example.com to schedule an exam. There is a $20 administration fee payable to MSU via cash, check, or charge on the day of the exam.
On the day of your scheduled exam, please bring the following:
- Your printed registration ticket from CLEP’s My Account registration portal
- Your driver’s license, passport or other government-issued identification that includes your photograph and signature, as well as a secondary form of ID that includes a photo and/or your signature, such as a student ID. You will be asked to show this identification to be admitted to the testing area. The last name on your primary ID must match the name on your registration ticket. Military test-takers, bring your military ID.
- $20 administration fee
The ATC is located on the 3rd floor of the Administration Building, room 361.
CLEP for Military Personnel
College-Level Examination Program® (CLEP®) exams are available to eligible military personnel as a way to save time and money while earning college credit. To assist military personnel in meeting their educational goals, the Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES) funds CLEP exams for eligible military service members and eligible civilian employees. CLEP exams can be scheduled using the online appointment scheduler. Testing is available Tuesdays at 1pm (1300) CST and Wednesdays at 9am CST. Registration must also be completed through CLEP. You CLEP ticket ID must be brought to you test appointment or you will be unable to test.

The Minot State University Center for Extended Learning holds a copy of the 2012 CLEP Official Study Guide which contains sample questions of all 33 CLEP Exams. This guide can be reviewed only in the CEL office; it is not available for check-out.
