Minot State University announced a total of 473 students were named to the President’s List, 302 students were named to the Vice President for Academic Affairs’ Honor Roll, and 10 students earned a spot on the Engagement Honor Roll for Fall 2020.

Students who earned a term grade point average of 3.8 or higher while enrolled for 12 or more credits during the Fall 2020 semester were named to the list. The honor will show on the student’s transcript for the semester it was earned.

“I am especially pleased to congratulate all of the students being honored with Minot State University’s highest level of academic achievement — the President’s List. These students are to be applauded for their academic excellence and commended for the accomplishments they earned during the fall semester,” said Minot State President Dr. Steven Shirley.

As Minot State University nursing students left for semester break, construction crews began arriving.

Less than a month later, the Spring 2021 term began with triple the simulation space.

Thanks to a $246,000 CARES Act grant, the Department of Nursing now boasts three full-sized simulation lab rooms, a new high-fidelity mannequin, and other accessories, including a flat abdomen for their maternal mannequin. Renovations should be completed by Spring Break, with a storage room expansion occurring this summer.

“We wouldn’t have been able to make these changes without the CARES grant,” said April Warren, nursing chair. “Back in October, Dr. Geller (Laurie Geller, vice president for academic affairs) sent an email to all the chairs letting us know there were funds available. We had an opportunity to submit a grant request, and we put items together regarding the need for simulation expansion. When we were awarded, we were incredibly grateful.”

Minot State University bolstered its laptop inventory for distance learning thanks to a donation of 189 computers by Hess Corporation.

Minot State plans to utilize the laptops for HyFlex and virtual learning with the donation, increasing the number of computers available for check out by nearly five-fold.

“We appreciate the generosity of Hess Corporation with the donation of laptops for our students,” said Rick Hedberg, MSU vice president for advancement and MSU Development Foundation executive director. “The COVID-19 pandemic has been extremely disruptive to many of our students and we have a large number of students taking at least a portion of their classes online.  This wonderful donation from Hess Corporation has allowed us to distribute these laptops to students in need, allowing them to continue their education and keep them on track for a degree.

“Hess continues to be a wonderful community partner in so many ways and with so many non-profits in our region. We are fortunate to have Hess Corporation and their employees in Minot.”

Minot State Staff Senate is working with local businesses to have a Dine-to-Donate event each month for the remainder of the academic year. The events kicked off with Marco's Pizza yesterday. Staff Senate thanks all who participated and a special thanks to the staff and management of Marco's Pizza!

February's event is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 9 from 5-8 p.m. at Slim Chickens, 1416 South Broadway, in Minot. Mention the fundraiser at the register and Slim Chicken will donate 50% of your total. The Dine-to-Donate nights are both a fundraiser for Staff Senate and a way to help local restaurants. March, April, and May dates and locations will be announced soon. The Looyenga Leadership Center is offering multiple leadership workshops throughout spring semester covering topics such as stress and conflict management, burnout, decision making, team goal setting, and more! Minot State Staff Senate is proud to announce two individuals were selected to receive the Staff Senate Scholarship for the Spring 2021 semester. Earning the scholarship in 2021 is Caitlyn Messner and Kayli Olson. Congrats to the winners and thank you to all who have donated to the scholarship over the years.

Hartnett Hall Gallery
The gallery provides exhibition space for students, faculty, and community artists, and is located on the second floor on the west side of Hartnett Hall in Room 233. The Hartnett Hall Gallery is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays.

Northwest Arts Center
The gallery is located on the lower level of the Gordon B. Olson Library, with its own entrance on the south side of the library. The arts center is open Tuesday-Friday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Saturday 1-5 p.m., and by special arrangement. It is closed holidays. Masks and physical distancing are required.

• Art Reception: Of This Place - Join us for the opening reception of an exhibition of oil paintings by Avis Veikley on Tuesday, Feb. 9 from 6:30-8 p.m. There will be an artist’s talk at 7 p.m.
• Americas 2021: Paperworks - The Northwest Arts Center opens the spring semester at Minot State with the “Americas 2021: Paperworks” annual juried exhibition. The exhibition is on view Jan. 15-Feb. 26 in the Walter Piehl Gallery.
• Of This Place: An exhibition by North Dakota artist and painter Avis Veikley will be on view in the Northwest Arts Center’s Walter Piehl Gallery Feb. 9-March 9. 

Flat Tail Press
Flat Tail Press is an educational printmaking studio at Minot State University. The gallery is located in the landing space on second and third floor of the Minot State Student Center, west entrance. It is open Monday-Friday, 7 a.m.-12 p.m.

• "Arron S. Coleman | Prints 2015-2020" Layering multiple printmaking techniques, Aaron Coleman recalls the chaos found in the world around us. Social media, news, television, comics, music and movies constantly bombard us, and Coleman provides visual mash-ups of these intense and incongruent messages. His prints from 2015-2020 will be shown starting Dec. 10, 2020 until Feb. 26, 2021. Artist Statement: My work once found its origin in current events concerning the sociopolitical issues of discrimination, civil rights and the misuse of mainstream religion. More recently it has evolved into a blanket description of the apocalyptic world in which we live. Police  brutality, racial discrimination, religious extremism, persecution of the LGBT communities, economic unrest, global warming, species extinction, habitat loss, holy wars, power trips and ego mania are the extremes my work addresses.

Scott Peterson, operations supervisor in facilities management, was named Minot State University Staff Senate's December High Five Award winner.

Christopher Scott for being selected as the ASC Student of the Month for December. He has contributed to the Academic Support Center’s programs as a New Student Program Leader.

Professors Mikhail Bobylev, Chris Heth, Bob Crackel, and Naomi Winburn; student Stephanie Sundhagen; and several classrooms in the Cyril Moore Science Center, were featured in the ND EPSCoR (Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research) January Newsletter.
