COVID 19 Changes for Fall 2020/Spring 2021

Our number one priority is the safety and well-being of our staff, students and community.

To prevent the spread of COVID-19 the MSU Department of Nursing has made the following changes:

  1. Classroom sizes and in person lectures have been reduced to allow for social distancing. Hyflex learning and other blended methods have been incorporated to facilitate reduced classroom sizes.

  2. Nursing faculty have adjusted each class into groups A & B. Please note these groups are not able to be amended, and will remain the same for additional nursing courses that the student is enrolled. Work space modifications have been made and each work space is distanced 6 feet from the next workspace. Seating charts have been designed and you will be assigned a seat in each classroom (allows enhanced identification of student placement, should a close contact or quarantine concern arise).

  3. Hand sanitizer is to be used upon entering and leaving the classroom.

  4. Disinfecting wipes are located in every classroom. Student’s will wipe down their workstation before and after class. This includes computer lab use.

  5. Students will be required to be in personal protective equipment (PPE) in Lab/Simulation, this includes gowns, 3 ply surgical masks, as well as face shields. Additional PPE is available for faculty/student use during clinicals.

  6. Students have been assigned to smaller groups (4 or less) in labs/simulations. Once the student has been assigned a smaller group, the group will remain the same for other labs/simulations in other nursing courses that the student is enrolled. Each individual group will practice social distancing from all other groups.

  7. A cleaning protocol has been developed to ensure equipment and simulations/lab environments are cleaned in between groups. Additional disinfecting wipes and hand sanitizer is available at various work stations.

  8. Furniture, including laptops, in the hall way have been removed and/or spread apart to ensure 6-foot social distancing. For that reason, please do not move furniture.

  9. Students will monitor for COVID 19 symptoms daily. The latest symptoms of COVID-19 can be found at: www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov

  10. If a student develops symptoms of COVID-19 per CDC guidelines, the student will self-isolate and contact the Student Health Center at 701-858-3371 (Monday through Friday 0800-1630). The student may contact First District Health Unit (701-852-1376) or a health care provider (option Trinity Health 701-857-5000 to state need for COVID-19 screening). In addition, the student will contact their course instructor.

  11. If a nursing student has known contact exposure with a COVID 19 positive case, the department will follow the Department of Nursing COVID-19 Student Algorithm (Appendix I in the Department of Nursing Handbook).

  12. In addition, students will follow the University Beaver Restart Plan which can be found at MSU COVID-19 website.

  13. Students must also sign the Department of Nursing COVID-19 Student Acknowledgement Form (Appendix J in Department of Nursing Handbook) each semester as necessary.
