JURORS STATEMENT:

Thank you to the staff of Northwest Art Center and to Minot State University for inviting me to jury the 29th INT’L All Media exhibition. It was a pleasure to view all of the fantastic art that was submitted, and a true challenge to select only a portion of them. Congratulations to all of the artists included in the exhibition. As a traditional and digital artist I have a deep appreciation for the thought, time, and honed skills that have gone into the making of all of these pieces. I was blown away by the mastery of traditional techniques that were submitted, as well as surprised by the ambition to deviate into newer means of art making.

I approached the jurying process by viewing the exhibition as an opportunity to display a survey of the current state of art making in 2024—a snapshot of the present in both media and content. Reflecting on this approach lead me to two questions when considering each submitted piece:

  1. How are modern aesthetics and ideas shining through and transforming centuries old methods in ways that could only exist today?
  2. How are artists utilizing budding new mediums to expand how art can be made and experienced?
All of the work showcased provides a response to at least one of these questions, and is part of the conversation of what it means to make art right now. The gambit of mediums and perspectives shown are a slice of what is possible.
