What does it take to be a Writing Center Tutor?
So you want to be a Writing Center tutor. Ask yourself:
- Do you like to write?
- Do you enjoy working one on one with other students?
- Do you enjoy reading other students’ papers?
- Do you consider yourself to be a competent writer (hey, no
one’s perfect!)
- Do you enjoy meeting new people and learning new things?
Did you answer "yes" to most of those questions? Then this job may be for you!
What are the Qualifications for Prospective Tutors?
Prospective tutors should:
- Have completed English 110 and 120 with a B or higher
- Be recommended by an instructor
- Submit an application and a writing sample
- Enroll in English 318 Writing Tutor Training (1 credit TBA course)
NOTE: If you have previous tutoring experience or qualifications,
some of these requirements may be waived. If you're interested,

Why Should You Be A Writing Center Tutor?
What are the benefits of being a tutor?

- If you're going to teach, it gives you excellent practice in teaching strategies
- You get to meet new people and learn new things

- Flexible hours: we try to work with everyone’s schedule.
- You can take as many (or as few) hours as you like (budget permitting)
- A chance to learn new technology. The Writing Center will be debuting e mail and on line tutoring soon.
- It’s fun!
