GEM Courses at Minot State University

General Education Courses

Written Communication
ENGL 110 College Composition I (3 credits) - Microsoft Word

ENGL 120 College Composition II (3 credits) - Requires Microsoft Word. Students who have not taken an online course in Blackboard must complete the Blackboard Tutorial.

Oral Communication
COMM 110 Fund of Public Speaking (3 credits) - Must have access to video camera. An iPad will work. Students will be required to email their video or upload them to You Tube. Must also have access to an adult listening audience and a professional location. There is no provision to give speeches face-to-face. Adobe Reader, PowerPoint Viewer, and Windows Media Player are required.

Social Science
ECON 201 Principles of Microeconomics (3 credits) - Students are required to be familiar with Word, Excel, and PowerPoint or PowerPoint viewer. Requires a MindTap access. If either the e-book or the standard physical textbook sold by the MSU book store is purchased, it will come with the access code. If a physical book is purchased outside MSU, the access code will need to be purchased separately. The e-book can be purchased with the access code directly from MindTap too.

ECON 202 Principles of Macroeconomics (3 credits) - Students are required to be familiar with Word, Excel, and PowerPoint or PowerPoint viewer. Requires a MindTap access. If either the e-book or the standard physical textbook sold by the MSU book store is purchased, it will come with the access code. If a physical book is purchased outside MSU, the access code will need to be purchased separately. The e-book can be purchased with the access code directly from MindTap too.

PSY 111 Introduction to Psychology (3 credits) - Textbook is required. Students are required to be familiar with Word or equivalent word processor and a recent version of Firefox or Internet Explorer. Students will also need a video player, Flash player, and the ability to download documents. A high speed Internet connection is recommended.

SOC 110 Introduction to Sociology (3 credits) - A textbook is required.

HIST 101 Western Civilization I (3credits) - This course requires two textbooks and has 15 lesson multiple choice quizzes, 15 lesson short essay assignments, and three section one hour essay exams.

HIST 103 US History to 1877 (3 credits) - Requires the ability to play video and audio files. Microsoft Office 2000 or higher, RealPlayer and Windows Media Player are required. Asynchronous discussion is a requirement in this course.

HIST 104 US History from 1877 (3 credits) - Requires the ability to play video and audio files. Microsoft Office 2000 or higher, RealPlayer and Windows Media Player are required. Asynchronous discussion is a requirement in this course.

Mathematics
MATH 103 College Algebra (4 credits) - Course requires weekly assignments and discussions, test proctor, and TI-83 or TI-84 calculator.  Access code for WebAssign and physical textbook are required and can be purchased bundled from the MSU Bookstore.  If you buy a used textbook, WebAssign access can be purchased separately at the WebAssign website. This course also requires a significant weekly time commitment.

Humanities
PHIL 102 Philosophy of Human Nature (3 credits) - A textbook and a word processing program are required.
