MOORHEAD, Minn. The Minot State University men's and women's track and field teams started the season in style as they broke four school records and qualified for the NAIA national meet in seven different events at the Concordia College Cobber Open.
"For the first meet of the year it was really good, I was really happy," MSU head coach Stu Melby said. "To have eight personal records and four school records right away is great."
Setting records were Minot native Kayla Montgomery, Bottineau's Abbey Aide and the women's 4x200 relay. Montgomery broke her own record in both the 55-meters and the 200, finishing with a time of 7.38 seconds in the 55 and 25.97 in the 200. She was third in both events.
Aide took second in the pole vault, clearing 11-feet-3. Montgomery and Aide joined Taylor Tuomey and Alissa Klose to set the school record in the relay with a time of 1:46.05.
Also earning trips to the national meet on the women's side was Klose in the triple jump going 36-feet. She was third in the triple jump and second in the long jump (16-feet-10 ?).
On the men's side, Khaldon Evans qualified in two events, winning the 600-meter with a 1:22.99 and taking second in the 200 at 22.29. Johnny Lester won the 55 and qualified for the national meet with a blistering 6.46 seconds.
"This is good for us to give us an idea of where we are at for next week and a good motivator," Melby said. "It was a good start."
The Beavers also got a win from Cory Meza in the 3,000 (9:11.08) and a second place finish from Tuomey in the 400.
