Aasen joins MSU javelin crew
MINOT, N.D. – Minot State University track and field has added another solid javelin thrower as the university signed Ben Aasen to a Dakota Athletic Conference letter of intent to participate with the Beavers in the spring.
Aasen, a Minot High School graduate, placed third in the javelin at the 2010 North Dakota Class A State Track and Field Championships this past spring. He finished the season with a career-best throw of 182-feet-9 in 2010. Aasen was the 2009 Class A runner up and was sixth in 2008.
“Ben will be a great addition to our javelin crew,” said MSU head coach Stu Melby. “He has very good marks in the javelin with strong finishes at state. He is very coachable with a great personality and strong academic background.”
The Beavers already sport two of the top five javelin throwers in the conference as senior Josh Ming was the DAC champion this past season, while Jerad Aasen finished fifth at the DAC outdoor championships.
Aasen joins brother Jerad and also comes to MSU with former Minot High teammate Phillip Streccius, who signed earlier in the season. Streccius was the Class A javelin champion in 2010.
“I know coach Waldera (MSU assistant coach Mark Waldera) is very excited to have the opportunity to work with Ben this coming year after watching him during his high school career,” Melby said. “With the addition of Ben, we now have two of the top three javelin throwers in the state joining our team to carry on our great tradition.
