6th Annual Wokathon Successful on a Beautiful Day
Sunday October 18 th the MSU Cross Country and Track & Field
teams held their Annual Workathon. It was a very rare fall day with
the temperature in the 60's, little wind and beautiful sunshine.
One of the only few nice days left to get yards ready for the winter,
the athletes split up into three teams each with a coach (Vega,
Corneliusen and Melby) and proceeded to assist 13 homeowners, each
one needing something different to be helped with. Most owners needed
their yards raked and with the windy days Minot has seen, there
were a lot of leaves that needed raking. Gutters were cleaned out
because of the short summer, as well as a lawn was mowed. Originally
a list of eleven homes, neighbors of two of the houses asked if
we could help them with their yards.
Each individual whose house was being helped said they were extremely
gracious for the event and the assistance. Most were older citizens
who have a hard time with the work and needed some assistance with
the big chore. An example would be Jane Hohmann, a 91 year old Minot
resident who needed a little help with the leaves that had fallen
in her yard. With all of the leaves that had fallen, it would have
taken one person over a day to clean the yard up and the team Vega
finished it in less than an hour. At another site, owner Shirley
Meek pitched in and raked a little and provided cookies and juice
to show her appreciation. Other residents also provided baked cookies
and apple cider to teams. No matter where the teams went to help
each resident was overtaken with appreciation and some provided
donations to the team even though it was not required. It gave the
Minot State Cross Country and Track & Field team great honor
to help the Minot community year after year with this event.
