Mixing Studies and Sports
I was recruited by Minot State for basketball, but spoke with the track coach to make sure I could compete in track, too. Turns out, MSU coaches have a lot of respect for each other’s programs. For example, one coach would move practice time to accommodate my need to travel for the other sport. I wouldn’t have had that opportunity at a larger school.
Instead of athletics taking away from my studies, they’ve actually enhanced my educational experience. The determination you put into athletics carries over into academics. You want to excel in the classroom like you do in sports, not just get by. The coaching staff at MSU emphasizes balance between school and extracurriculars. I’ve definitely learned time-management and multi-tasking skills.
My javelin throw of 163-7 at the NAIA national championships was a personal best and a Minot State record. Now I’m coaching track and field at Minot State and continuing my training in javelin. I’d like to qualify for the Visa Championship Series--and, of course, the Olympics.
