MSU's Flat Tail Press hosts celebration of print

Minot State University’s Flat Tail Press will host a celebration of printmaking May 2 in Hartnett 215E, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. MSU students and faculty will join printmakers from around the world to participate in the worldwide Print Day in May event. Focusing on the number 10, Flat Tail participants will create 10 unique print editions of 10 prints sized 10"x10" within 10 hours.

This is the first time that Flat Tail Press and Minot State University have participated in the Print Day in May event. The event began in 2007 when printmakers at Monterey Peninsula College in California designated the first Saturday in May to printing as a community. It has since become a worldwide event, including participants from various countries on five continents.

“We are excited to host our first Print Day in May,” said Ryan Stander, assistant professor of art and co-director of Flat Tail Press. “Printmakers are often communal types, usually because they need a clean pair of hands to help, though sometimes they need someone else’s expertise, and sometimes just for fellowship during a long day in the studio. This event brings all of that together and dovetails nicely with the educational mission of Flat Tail Press. Our goal as a press is to expand people’s awareness and appreciation of the remarkable world of printmaking and make some great art along the way!”

Students and faculty will print using a variety of processes from woodcuts and screen prints, to lithographs and alternative photographic processes to make the 10 editions. All are invited to attend and learn more about the different printing processes and help participants with their prints. Follow Flat Tail Press at https://www.facebook.com/FlatTailPress for progress posts throughout the day.
