Transfer Student Admission Application Procedure

Currently, there is no mandatory application deadline; however, it is suggested that all students planning to enter the University for the fall term apply by April 1 of the preceding spring. Students planning to enter during subsequent terms should apply at least one month in advance.

Transfer Student Planning Checklist

If you are transferring in more than 24 SHs, you must submit:

  1. Complete an online admission application
  2. Application fee: $35 (non-refundable)
    • Call 1-800-777-0750, extension 3361 to pay with VISA, MasterCard, or Discover
    • Or mail a check to:

  3. Send a copy of your shot records showing two doses of M/M/R (M/M/R is the Measles, Mumps, and Rubella vaccination) to the Student Health Center.
    • Students enrolled in only distance education courses and who have no plans to attend the university campus may have this requirement waived. You can find an Immunization Record form on the Student Health Center's website. Print out the form, complete the Self Reported Immunization Exceptions section, and return it.
    • Students who come to campus at a later time will be required to submit proof of immunization.
    • Students born prior to 1957 will not be required to show proof of immunization.
  4. All official college transcripts
  5. After you have been accepted to MSU, you must set up your MSU email account. This is MANDATORY for online courses.

If you are transferring in less than 24 SHs, you must submit the four above requirements plus the following:

  2. Final high school or GED transcripts
  3. College Preparatory Course Report Form (if high school graduation date is 1993 or later)

High School Core Admission Requirements: A new student must be a high school graduate who has met "Core requirements" as listed below or hold a GED.

Core Requirements: (for those who graduated in 1993 or later)

  • English (4 units)
  • Laboratory Science (3 units)
  • Mathematics (3 units) Algebra 1 and above
  • Social Studies (3 units)
  • NOTE: A unit typically represents one year of study

Students who do not meet required core are encouraged to enroll in any of North Dakota's two-year institutions. Upon successful completion of 24 transferable credits, students are eligible for admission to a four-year university.

The admission application process begins by submitting an admission application and the corresponding $35 fee to the Records Office. Other required items may be submitted at later dates as they become available. All materials should be on file prior to the student's first day of class. The $35 application fee is nonrefundable. A letter will then be sent to the prospective student advising of a full, conditional, or denied admission status. Students must be fully admitted before financial aid will be distributed. Accepted students will receive subsequent correspondence directing them to the date, place, and time for orientation/registration activities.

Call 1-800-777-0750, extension 3361 to pay your non-refundable $35 Application Fee with a VISA, MasterCard or Discover or mail with your completed application to:

Health Record/Proof of Immunization for measles, mumps, and rubella is required by the State Board of Higher Education. Upon the student's request, such records are sometimes available through the student's high school (or college if a transfer student) and can be sent to the University along with the student's high school (college) transcript. Proof of immunization for measles, mumps, and rubella requires: 1) two doses of vaccine given no less than one month apart, or 2) positive serologic tests, or 3) proof that date of birth is prior to 1957. Students outside of North Dakota may have this requirement waived if they have no plans to attend the university proper.

ACT scores should be sent to the University directly from the ACT office in Iowa City, Iowa. A student specifies the schools to which he/she wants scores sent at the time of writing the ACT exam. Subsequent requests may be made by contacting ACT Records, P.O. Box 451, Iowa City, IA 52243, (319)337-1313.

While ACT scores are not routinely used to determine a student's acceptance for enrollment, the scores must be submitted as a part of the admission process. Scores are used to assist students and their academic advisors in making good academic planning decisions. Scores are also used in making admissions decisions for freshman who have not completed the required high school core curriculum. Students who are unable to write the ACT exam prior to enrollment may be conditionally accepted for one term, provided that the ACT is written during that first term of enrollment. Those who fail to take the ACT exam prior to the end of the first term of enrollment will be placed on admissions hold and will not be allowed to continue at the University until the requirement is met. While the ACT is preferred, the University will accept SAT scores as an alternative.

An official high school transcript records all work completed from grades 9-12 as well as the official date of high school graduation. This transcript must be sent directly from the high school to the Records Office. Full admission status is contingent upon receipt of the final, official high school transcript.

Students who hold a GED (General Education Development - high school equivalency certificate), rather than a high school diploma, must submit photocopies of their GED scores and certificates. For admission purposes GED scores must average = 45 overall with no score lower than 40 on any of the subparts. Students generally may not take the GED until they are at least 18 years of age and their high school class has graduated. Those who wrote the GED through the Minot State University Student Development Center may arrange to have copies made there.
