Jon Rumney: Violin recital
Music professor and talented violinist Dr. Jon Rumney will give a recital of French music with pianist and colleague Dr. Dianna Anderson Sunday, Feb. 3 at 3 p.m. in Minot State University's Ann Nicole Nelson Hall.
The recital will include two French works, different in style and expression, that begin and end the musical program. The first piece, written by Jean Baptiste Senaille', is a French sonata, written in 1720, accompanied by harpsichord and cello, featuring Dr. Erik Anderson. The final selection is a French sonata written in 1875 by Gabriel Faure' that is full of dynamics and expressive slides representing the Romantic period.
"The Baroque aesthetic of Senaille' is based on harmonies and a variety of ornamentation, rather than vibrato and virtuoso technique," Rumney said. "Faure's late romantic piece is very much like vocal song, and full of passion. The contrast of the two celebrate the spirit of viva la difference."
Sandwiched between the French works will be two short presentations that pay tribute to famous violinists of the 20th century. Highlights include a Gershwin song specially arranged by Russian violinist Jascha Heifetz, and a Schumann Romance, arranged by Austrian violinist and composer Fritz Kreisler.
Rumney's celebration of diversity in MSU's thriving musical culture is free and open to the pubic.
