MSU SSWO is 'Freezin’ for a Reason, Nov. 12

The Minot State University Student Social Work Organization is sponsoring "Freezin’ for a Reason" at the Town and Country Shopping Center parking lot on Wednesday (Nov. 12) from noon to 9 p.m. "Freezin’ for a Reason" is an annual event to raise awareness of homelessness in the community and gather food items for the Minot Area Homeless Coalition and local food pantries.

"The food pantries and soup kitchens in the Minot area have seen a 25 percent increase in usage," said Louis "Mac" McLeod, executive director of MAHC. "The economic downturn has affected many who have never had to seek assistance."

The participants stand in the cold and "freeze" to receive a firsthand experience of what homelessness is like. You can be a part of the effort by dropping off food or monetary contributions at the parking lot or by "freezin’" with the SSWO members. The Minot Area Homeless Coalition and SSWO are holding the event as part of the National Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week, Nov. 16-22.

If you don’t want to actually participate in the Nov. 12 event, but you want to donate food or money, students will pick up grocery or monetary donations on campus until Thursday (Nov. 13). For pick-up, e-mail Debra Dewitz, SSWO’s faculty advisor, at debra.dewitz@minotstateu.edu or SSWO members at sswo@minotstateu.edu.
