NW Festival of Music welcomes 300-plus students
The MSU Division of Music hosts the 29th Annual Northwest Festival of Music on Friday and Saturday with over 300 high school students attending. Concerts open to the public in conjunction with this event include the free Showcase Concert featuring MSU ensembles at 3:30 p.m. on Friday and the NW Festival Honors Band and Choirs Concert at 7 p.m. on Saturday. The price for the honors concert is $3 general admission.
Participation in the NW Festival of Music honors band and choirs is by audition. Over 500 auditions were evaluated and final member selections were made for the approximate 110-member honor band, 130-member choir, and 110-member women’s choir. During the honors concert each group will present about 30 minutes of music chosen by MSU conductors Joe Alme, Ken Bowles, and Cherie Collins.
In mid-September students in grades 8-12 from throughout North Dakota and Montana auditioned. They either sent in audition tapes or CDs or were judged by the directors during visits to the high schools in Beulah, Williston and Minot. Afterward music was sent to selected students for preparation prior to the two days of rehearsals this week at MSU.
