MSU senior Castro garners Arthur Ashe award
05/16/07
Jenny Castro, a senior majoring in broadcasting, was
recognized as a member of the 2007 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports
Scholars by Diverse: Issues In Higher
Education. Castro was named to the
women’s basketball 1st team. The
magazine established the awards to honor
undergraduate students of color who
are achieving both academically and
athletically.
Castro has been a stand-out member
of the MSU women’s basketball and track
and field teams. In 2003-04, she helped the Lady Beavers reach
the Elite Eight at NAIA II National Tournament. This year,
she set the school record for most rebounds in a game with 20
rebounds. In 2006, Castro earned NAIA All-American Status
in javelin and was the Dakota Athletic Conference outdoor
track and field champion in javelin. She qualified for the 2006
indoor NAIA championships in shot put but did not compete
due to a conflict with basketball. Castro just finished a term
as the vice president of the MSU Student Association and is a
member of Honors Society and Media Inc. She has served as
a youth mentor with the YWCA for two years and has been
involved with MSU Youth Basketball Camp for four years.
Castro’s fall GPA was 4.0 and her overall GPA is 3.90. Visit the

Diverse: Issues In Higher Education invites U.S. colleges and
universities to participate in the annual awards program by
nominating their outstanding sports scholars. The awards are
inspired by tennis legend Arthur Ashe Jr.’s commitment to
education as well as his love for the game of tennis. In addition
to their athletic ability, Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars must
exhibit academic excellence and community activism. To be
included, students have to compete in an intercollegiate sport;
maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2; and be active on
their campuses or in their communities. Dick Jenkins, vice
president for student affairs, nominated Castro.
