Karen Langemo: Minot, North Dakota, BS in Music Education, Composite, senior

In high school I spent a lot of time weighing my decision on what college I wanted to attend. But, in the back of my mind I knew that I wanted to be at Minot State to study music, turn it into a career, and turn a love of a hobby into an overflowing, unending passion for music! I am glad I chose to study music at Minot State University. Since Minot State is a smaller school, the music division is a close-knit community. It's like having our own little family. The professors are so supportive and caring. They want to help you be successful as a musician and they truly care about how you're doing as a person. The music division faculty push you, challenge you to be curious or find another approach, and invest their time, love for music, and energy into you to help you become more successful. It is a great gift to be able to study with such high caliber faculty that Minot State’s music division has been blessed with.

When I first came to Minot State, I wasn't sure where my musical gifts would fit it and what I should focus on because I was a singer who played other instruments. I started out as a composite major, focusing on both vocal and instrumental. I discovered quickly that my heart was, and has always been, in my singing! I love playing the violin and percussion, but I wanted to focus on developing my voice. The music division has allowed me to pursue my vocal path, but not completely give up the joy I also find in playing instrumental music. I have played violin with the top-notch Minot Symphony Orchestra, and most recently was part of an opera scenes production class. I currently participate in the marimba and percussion ensembles, and am also taking private marimba lessons.

I cannot emphasize enough how much I am blessed to be studying music at Minot State University with the guidance and support of the faculty and staff, and with my peers I have grown to love and call my family and friends. Choosing to be a part of the music program here was the right decision for me, no question about it. The community and passion for music here is a beautiful thing and I hope that many more people have the opportunity to be a part of it!
