Helping New MSU Students Succeed!

Minot State University is committed to your success and we would like to invite you to take part in a program focused on helping new students succeed in their first year.  The Mentoring Program at Minot State University is designed to assist incoming freshmen with their transition to the academic and social environment of Minot State University. This is accomplished by pairing incoming freshman with a faculty/staff mentor who will help you access resources and provide support to make your first year at Minot State University a success.

Would you like to:

  • Have an opportunity to meet new people?
  • Have someone to ask questions, talk to or visit with?
  • Have someone to help you identify campus resources when you have problems such as struggling in a class, getting sick, having roommate problems, etc.?

If you said yes to any of the above the
MSU Mentor Program is for you!

What is a Mentor?

  • A faculty, staff or peer mentor is someone who is familiar with Minot State University programs and resources
  • Someone who will listen to  your concerns/questions and will help you access available services

The Value of a Mentor?
Your mentor will support you throughout your first-year at Minot State University.  You will be asked to meet with them at least three times per semester. Many of our current students drop in and see their mentor once a week; we are here for you whenever you need us.  Your mentor will help you in any way necessary to make your transition as smooth as possible.  Our goal is to help you realize you are a valued part of the Minot State University community.

How does the Mentoring Program work?
First time Minot State University students are invited to apply to the Minot State University Mentoring Program at the beginning of each semester. Students interested in the program should complete our online application.  The information you include in your application will be used to find a mentor for you, so please list as much information as possible.  You will be provided with contact information for your mentor the week before school starts.

As a participant of the MSU Mentor Program, we ask that you be a responsible and active participant. We ask that you be willing to do the following:

  • Meet with your mentor at least three times per semester
  • Attend at least two Life Skills Workshops which are on topics such as time management, money management, study skills, and much more
  • Meeting with your academic advisor once per semester to plan courses for the following semester
  • Respond to email requests from your mentor or the mentor program coordinator.
  • Be honest and open so that we can help you succeed!
  • Be willing to meet new people and simply have FUN!
