Peter Stewart - Head Coach
Peter Stewart

Peter Stewart became the 14th head men's basketball coach during a press conference at the MSU Student Center in March 2010.

Stewart comes to Minot State after spending eight seasons at Peninsula College in Port Angeles, Wash. Stewart He led his team to the North Division Conference Championship three times, the most recent in 2007-08. Stewart's overall record at Peninsula College was 127-101 with an 82-46 mark in conference. During a span of five seasons from 2003-04 to 2007-08, he was 62-18 in conference play, including at 36-4 record at home during that span. Stewart was named the conference coach of the year twice, first in 2003-04 and the latest in 2007-08. His Peninsula College team has played in the post season six of the past seven seasons and has placed in the post season four of the past five years.

Stewart has coached at all levels of basketball, including stints at Dakota College at Bottineau (1987-88), Adams State (1992-93), Minot State (1993-94), the Malaysian Professional Basketball league (1995) and the Australian Professional Basketball League (1989-1996 as a player and coach). He coached his team to the 1995 Malaysian Basketball League Championship.

A 1989 graduate of the University of North Dakota, Stewart played four seasons for the Sioux, being named team captain and selected as the North Central Conference Academic Player of the Year. He is pursuing a Master’s Degree in exercise physiology, sport and leisure science through Adams State College.

Stewart, a native of Parshall, N.D., is married to Julie Ann Stewart, and they have three children.

Steve Grabowski - Assistant Coach Steve Grabowski


Steve Grabowski enters his sixth season as an assistant coach and his 10th year affiliated with the MSU men's basketball program.

Grabowski played four seasons for the Beavers and a year as a a student assistant coach.

During the past six seasons, the Beavers have qualified for the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball National Tournament Twice, won the Dakota Athletic Conference regular season title once and the postseason crown twice. MSU played in two of the past three DAC post season title games and have advanced to at least the semifinals of the DAC tournament four of his six season. Overall, MSU is 112-69 during Grabowski's coaching career.

In his first year as a student assistant coach, MSU advanced to its first NAIA Division II National Tournament and posted a school record in wins with 23.

During Grabowski's senior season, MSU finished with a 19-10 record, the most wins at the time since the 1971-72 season. Grabowski played in all 29 games, averaging four points and nearly four assists per game.He played in 16 games as a junior and shot 42 percent on 3-pointers for the Beavers. He was named Academic All-Conference during his junior year.

Grabowski earned All-WDA honors as a senior at Minot High School averaging 13 points, 3.5 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 2 steals per game for the Magicians. Grabowski helped the Magi to the 1999 Class A State Championship.

Grabowski also serves as an Admissions Counselor at Minot State and is currently working on a graduate degree in Human Performance and Physical Education.

Jake Carstensen - Assistant Coach Jake Carstensen


Jake Carstensen begins his first season as an assistant men’s basketball coach with Minot State University.

Carstensen is reunited with his junior college coach as he played two seasons under new MSU head coach Peter Stewart at Peninsula College in Port Angeles, Wash.

Carstensen has been involved with collegiate men’s basketball since his playing days at Peninsula College in 2002-04. As a sophomore, he helped Peninsula College to a 23-7 record and a third place finish in the NWAACC.

He played two seasons for Pacific Lutheran University, earning team captain honors his senior season. He began his coaching career at PLU, as he was hired as assistant men’s basketball coach and athletic department aid during the 2007 season.

Carstensen earned his Master’s Degree in Sports Management from Western Carolina University where he was a graduate assistant coach in 2008-09. He has a bachelor’s degree from PLU in History and Political Science.

Most recently, Carstensen was Assistant Director Athletic Grounds and Facilities at the University of Georgia in 2009-10. While at Georgia, Carstensen managed all athletic facilities and helped manage events.
