2005-2006 Coaches

Head Coach - Mike Hultz
Coach HultzMike HuItz enters his eighth season as the head coach of MSU basketball program.  During Hultz's rookie campaign, the Beavers posted their first .500 record since 1994-95 and enjoyed the school's best conference finish since 1993-94.  After a couple of rebuilding seasons Hultz has the Beavers at the top of the Dakota Athletic Conference by winning the 2005 DAC-10 regular season and tournament titles.   The 2005 team set a school record for wins (23) and made an appearance in the NAIA II National Tournament.  For his efforts Hultz was recognized as 2005 DAC-10 Coach of the Year. The Beavers have finished no lower than third during the past four seasons compiling a conference record of 49-23.  During the 2003-04 campaign, MSU was ranked nationally in the NAIA Top 25 for the first time in the school's history and has appeared in the national poll in all but two rankings over the past two years.  

HuItz comes to Minot after five years at Northern State University in South Dakota.  After two seasons as a graduate assistant and a volunteer assistant, he served as NSU's head assistant basketball coach and Director of Athletic Development. During his tenure at Northern, the Wolves won four conference titles and made appearances in the 1994 NAIA II National Championship game and the NAIA National Semifinals in 1995. Northern then moved to NCAA II, during which time the Wolves qualified for the NCAA II National Tournament in each of his three seasons. Those final three years were highlighted by winning the North Central Regional Playoffs and advancing to the NCAA II Elite Eight. Hultz, an Idaho native, graduated from Notus High School in 1988. He then attended the College of Idaho in Caldwell. There, Hultz served as a student assistant for three seasons in which the 'Yotes made appearances in the 1989 NAlA Elite Eight and the 1991 NAIA Sweet Sixteen. After his time at the C of I, Hultz moved onto the University of Utah for one season, where he again filled the role of student assistant under head coach Rick Majerus. The Utes finished third in the post-season National Invitational Tournament (NIT).

Hultz then returned to the College of Idaho and graduated in 1993 with a major in physical education and a minor in computer science. While finishing his undergraduate degree there, he served as an assistant basketball coach at Homedale High School and head baseball coach at Marsing High School. He led the Marsing Huskies to a fourth place finish in the 1993 state tournament.

Mike and his wife, Shannon, are the parents of three boys. Sam (16), Max (13) and Oscar (2).

Assistant Coach - Steve Grabowski
Coach GrabowskiSteve Grabowski enters his first year as the Beavers Head Assistant Basketball coach.   Grabowski has been an instrumental part of MSU's basketball program the past five years.  After a four year playing career Grabowski entered the coaching profession last season at Minot State as a student assistant coach. 

During Steve's senior season as a player, MSU compiled a 19-10 record which at the time was the most wins by a Minot State team since the 1971-1972 season.  He averaged 4 points and nearly 4 assist per game.  In his junior season, Grabowski appeared in 16 contests, and shot an impressive 42% from the three-point line while earning Academic All-Conference Honors.  Coach Grabowski's court sense and basketball savvy have definitely transfered over into his coaching duties, which makes his presence on the sidelines a valuable one.

Before his time at Minot State, he attended Minot High School where he was a member of the 1999 Class A State Championship team.  Grabowski earned All-WDA honors as a senior while averaging 13 points, 3.5 assists, 3.5 rebounds, and 2 steals per game.  He also made the WDA All-Tournament team as a junior.

Coach Grabowski will be primarily in charge of recruiting efforts in addition to strength/conditioning and on-the-floor coaching.  Steve also serves as an Admissions Counselor at Minot State.  He is the son of Steve and Diane Grabowski.

Assistant Coach - Scott DeLorme
Jeff Brandt After one year as a member of the Beaver Basketball program Scott DeLorme joins the MSU coaching staff as a student assistant.

DeLorme appeared in 15 games for the Beavers a year ago but foot problems have caused DeLorme to end his playing career early and begin working on his professional career.

DeLorme began his college career at Williston State College where he played two season. During his sophomore year DeLorme averaged 14.2 points, dished out 2.5 assists and came up with 2.3 steals per game.  He also led the nation in free throw shooting at 90.3 percent.  DeLorme was also an All-Conference golfer during his freshman season.

Highlights of his High School career include leading Williston High to third and fifth place finishes in the North Dakota Class 'A' State Tournament. DeLorme was named All-State as a senior, averaging 15 points per game.  DeLorme was a Two-time All-WDA selection and 2002 Lions All-Star game participant.   In addition to his accomplishments as a basketball player DeLorme was a Three-time All-State tennis player.  During his senior season he won the North Dakota State Doubles Championship and helped the team to a second place finish at the state meet. He was the West Region's Senior Athlete of the Year in Tennis and a North Dakota Mr. Tennis finalist.

DeLorme is the son of Greg and Kim DeLorme and is a Business Education major.

Assistant Coach - Qasim Ward
Qasim Ward joins the Beaver coaching staff after a great two-year playing career at Minot State.  In "Q's" two years at MSU the Beavers compiled a record of 42-18 and won DAC-10 Regular Season and Tournament Championships.  The Beavers also made an appearance in last year's NAIA II National Tournament.  Ward was known for his firey style of play and hopes to bring that intensity to the floor as a coach.  Ward averaged 8 points and over 2 steals per game during his senior season and set the school record for most steals in a game with 9 against Dakota State last season.

Prior to coming to MSU, Ward played one season at South Mountain College in Phoenix, AZ where he averaged 10 points and 3 assists per game.  Ward finished second in the conference in steals at over 3 per contest ranking him 10th nationally. South Mountain appeared in the Region championship game that season.  Ward began his college career as a football player where he led the nation in Kick-off Returns as a freshman at NCAA III UMass-Boston.

A two-year letterwinner at Chelsea High in Massachusetts Ward was Co-MVP of the Commonwealth Athletic Conference during his senior season.  He averaged 19 points and 8 assists per game and led team to a 19-4 record, a league title and a State Tournament appearance.  Ward was also a four-year starter in football.  He was named the Conference's Most Valuable Defensive player during his junior year as a defensive end and the league's Offense Player of the Year as a senior wide receiver.  Chelsea High won the State Championship in his junior season and finished with a record of 10-0-1.

Ward will graduate this Fall with a degree in Broacasting.  Q calls Newmark, NJ his home and is the Son of Doris Ward.

Assistant Coach - Mike Woollard
Coach FujimotoMike Woollard enters his first year as an assistant coach with Minot State . Mike comes to the Beavers from Kamsack (Canada) where he served as head coach of the High School Spartans as well as the Zone 4 Saskatchewan games team. A 1995 graduate of M.S.U. and a Beaver Baseball alum, Mike has returned to pursue his Masters Degree and assist with the Beavers. Coach Woollard will assist in strength and conditioning, on-the-floor coaching and the development of the post players. Mike is the son of Tim and Mary Ann Woollard.





Student Manager - Erik Bertram
Coach FujimotoErik Bertram begins his second season serving as the Beavers Student Manager.  Bertram is from from Williston, ND and is majoring in Criminal justice, Psychology with a minot in addiction studies.  In addition to his basketball duties Erik is a Residence Hall Assistant in McCulloch Hall.  Erik is the son of Joan Bertram.
