Ingrid, China Study Tour, 2007

What were your experiences with culture shock? How did you deal with it?
It wasn’t too bad. I come from a country (Peru) which is in some ways the same as China so I wasn’t too surprised. However the food wasn’t like I expected, but I dealt with it because I had to—the same with the water was hot, and other things that were different. I think you get used to it.

Was it worth it?
It was worth it because now I know China, their culture and their food etc. And because of it now I want to learn Chinese, and probably go back to China again. The trip made me feel like I need to go and travel more!! It was a wonderful experience.

What was your favorite experience?
Going to the Chinese club, their music was different. Also going to the Great Wall!

What was the biggest surprise that you noticed about our country when you came home?
I was still feeling like I was in China!!! But I wasn’t. I missed China very much!!

Advice for future students.
I think students should take advantage of this opportunity that the university has given us. You learn so many things. It’s like it opens your mind more to see other cultures.
