MSU improves DAC-10 record to 3-0 with 34 - 7 Homecoming win over Si Tanka
Huron

Mike Manston
Minot State University head football coach Mike Sivertson doesn't really know
how good his youthful Beavers are this season.
Other than a setback in the first game to NCAA Division II Bemidji State (Minn.),
the Beavers have rolled over three straight Dakota Athletic Conference (DAC-10)
opponents, including a 34-7 homecoming victory over SiTanka-Huron University
at Herb Parker Stadium Saturday.
The defending conference tri-champion Beavers fought off a stiff challenge
in the first half from the Screaming Eagles and rallied for the lopsided victory,
mostly with stingy defense. The MSU defense stymied Huron's offense with a
blitz package that confused the Screaming Eagles the entire second half.
"I don't know
what it was, for some reason we just weren't able to pick up their blitzes,"
said SiTanka-Huron coach Stan Rettew. "They are a very good defensive
football team and we let them take it to us in the second half after we played
even in the first half."
The
pressure package for the Beavers has been very effective the past two weeks
as MSU recorded a season-high 12 sacks in a victory over Jamestown College
last week and added five on Saturday.
MSU
defensive back/linebacker Riley Price excelled on the blitz for the Beavers,
making eight unassisted tackles and collecting two sacks for a total loss
of 10 yards. Price, a sophomore from Blackfoot, Idaho, also had an interception
and forced a fumble that led to an MSU field goal in the fourth quarter.
"We
found something that worked and kept going to it," Price said of the
MSU blitzes. "We knew that we might be able to run some from watching
film. We didn't tackle well in the first half, but we executed a lot better
in the second half. We know the defense can still get better and we have confidence
that we can go out and get the job done every week."
The
aggressive play is something first-year defensive coordinator Jim Louis was
pleased with Saturday, especially in the second half.
"We
have been blitzing a little more the last couple of weeks," Louis said,
"because we have two first-year corners who are a little more comfortable
with man-to-man coverage rules and they get to do that when we blitz. We try
to pick and choose our spots and mix up the schemes a little bit. We have
some players who are very familiar with our system and do a good job when
we blitz."
Except
for one blown coverage that led to SiTanka-Huron's only score, the Beavers'
defense controlled the game, allowing Huron only 247 total yards.
MSU
got on the board first when Nathan Fielding hooked up with Abner Lopez on
a 7-yard swing pass with 12:38 to play in the opening quarter. The play was
set up by a 45-yard completion to Louis Brown and a 13-yard completion to
Lopez and capped off a 71-yard drive for a 7-0 lead.
After
a SiTanka-Huron punt on its first possession, the Screaming Eagles tied the
game when Keldrick Stokes hooked up with a wide open Leon Hall for an 80-yard
strike with 9:23 to play in the first. Hall got behind MSU defensive back
Robin Watkins and danced untouched into the end zone.
The
Beavers took the lead for good at 14-7 when Cole Ritter banged into the end
zone from three yards out just seven seconds into the second quarter and Price
intercepted a Stokes pass near midfield with just less than 3:30 to play in
the half as the Beavers held on to a 14-7 advantage at the break.
In
the second half, it was all MSU. Lopez scored on a trap play from 45 yards
out to give the Beavers a 21-7 lead in the third quarter and Harry Mills hauled
in a 39-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter. Freshman kicker Marko Babic
added two field goals from 32 and 25 yards to close out the scoring.
MSU
improved to 3-1 overall and 3-0 in conference play. SiTanka-Huron slipped
to 2-2 overall and 1-2 in conference play. The Beavers will play at Dakota
State in Madison, S.D., next Saturday.
Homecoming 2003
Saturday
September 27th will be the third week of DAC-10 play, and has MSU hosting 2-1
Si Tanka Huron for Homecoming. Huron is 1-1 in the DAC-10
this year with a 0-41 road loss to #8 U of Mary (3-0), and a 27-21 come from
behind home win last weekend vs SD Tech (1-2). Kick-off is set for 1:30 pm.

Beavers defeat Jamestown
35-17
By: Mike Manston
As quick as Hurricane Isabel wreaked havoc on the Eastern Seaboard earlier
in the week, the Minot State University Beavers caused an equal amount of damage
to the Jamestown College Jimmies here Saturday.
The Beavers forced a fumble on the Jimmies' first play from scrimmage and scored
on their own first play -- just 10 seconds into the game -- when All-American
wide receiver Harry Mills caught a touchdown pass from Nathan Fielding from
18 yards out for a 7-0 cushion.
That early score helped lead the NAIA's No. 25-ranked MSU Beavers to a 37-15
victory over the Jimmies in DAC-10 action.
The Jimmies fumbled on their second play from scrimmage after Casey Lee was
stripped of the ball after a 28-yard pass completion. JC was forced to punt
on its third offensive possession and freshman kicker Marko Babic stretched
the Beavers' lead to 10-0 with a 23-yard field goal at the 9:30 mark of the
opening quarter.
"Our first two plays, when we turned the ball over on plays that looked
like they were going to be successful, hurt us and everything just kind of snowballed
from there," JC coach Curt Skotnicki said.
Those two plays were just the first in a long line of failures for the JC offense,
which managed a meager 16 yards rushing on 47 attempts. JC passed for just 108
yards to total 124 yards of offense on the day.
The MSU defense swarmed the JC ballcariers, pressured the Jimmies' quarterbacks
and belted the wide receivers every time they touched the ball to the tune of
12 sacks for 77 yards. The 16 rushing yards by the Jimmies was well below their
259 yards per game rushing average through their first two games of the year.
MSU defensive end
Robbie Hauptman was just one star in a plethora of standouts on the MSU defense
Saturday. Hauptman, a sophomore from Billings, Mont., finished with two sacks
and a blocked punt.
"We blitzed a
lot and knew from watching the tapes that we could get to their quarterback
and force him to make some mistakes," Hauptman said. "A game like
this where we controlled all aspects was a real confidence booster for us."
Senior linebackers
Matt Bennefeld and Shaun Cozort and Hauptman's defensive end partner on the
other side of the line, Deangelo Halfacre, blew up several plays before they
developed and combined for nine of the 12 MSU sacks.
"After a game
like this, our defense gained a lot of confidence in our offense," Hauptman
said. "We can concentrate on only one job and that's makes things a lot
easier for everybody."
The play of the Beavers
was no surprise to Skotnicki.
"We knew all
along that Minot was a very good football team and that the media needed to
get their story straight by saying Minot wasn't a good team," Skotnicki
said.
MSU coach Mike Sivertson
was pleased with the effort of his team.
"We got some
early turnovers that got us going and off to a good start," he said. "We
feel like we took another step forward and we need to continue to improve."
The Beavers held a
270-124 edge in total offense, a 98-16 edge in rushing yards and a 4.4-1.8 yards
per play edge. Those numbers offsetted a 34:45-25:15 edge by the Jimmies in
time of possession.
With the win, MSU
stayed unbeaten in conference play with a 2-0 record and improved to 2-1 overall.
Jamestown College remained winless on the season to fall to 0-3 and 0-2.
MSU will return home
Saturday for homecoming against Huron University of South Dakota.

MSU defense pitches in to assure Fielding's first start is successful
by Mike Manston
Freshman quarterback Nathan Fielding wasn't outstanding in his collegiate starting
debut, but he was good enough to lift the Minot State University Beavers to
their first win of the season with an 18-0 victory over Black Hills State University
at Herb Parker Stadium Saturday.
After putting up just 140 yards of total offense in an opening week loss to
Bemidji (Minn.) State, the Beavers took a step toward defending their Dakota
Athletic Conference (DAC-10) championship of a year ago. MSU improved to 1-0
in conference play and 1-1 overall. Fielding completed 14-of-23 passes for 180
yards and a touchdown and the Beavers finished with 229 yards of total offense.
Most of that 229 yards of offense was set up by the MSU defense, which held
the Yellow Jackets to 183 yards of offense and just 70 yards in the second half.
The Beavers' defense set up all three scores and scored the team's first points
of the year by recording a safety in the second quarter.
"When you're playing a lot of young kids like we are, sometimes you have
to rely on your defense to play well and take some pressure off of the offense
until the offense can get some confidence," MSU coach Mike Sivertson said.
"Improvement every week will have to be the theme of the year for us as
Nathan (Fielding) made adjustments and went through his first game."
It was hardly a play to remember, but Fielding completed his first college pass
late in the first quarter to Abner Lopez for a 1-yard loss. After that, he completed
all of his next six passes and finished the half with close to 100 yards through
the air and a touchdown.
Running back Cole Ritter scored the first offensive touchdown of the season
for the Beavers when he scooted in from eight yards out for an 8-0 lead with
1:29 remaining before the half. The scoring drive was set up by an interception
by cornerback Marques Tucker and aided by the game's first play of more than
10 yards. Fielding hooked up with Lopez on a fly down the middle for a 23-yard
gain that took the ball to the 19-yard line.
MSU hung its second touchdown just more than a minute later when the Yellow
Jackets fumbled the ensuing kickoff. Fielding connected on a corner fade to
All-American wideout Harry Mills with 43 seconds remaining in the first half
to stake MSU to 15-0 lead at the break. Mills outstretched Yellow Jackets cornerback
Cole Seppie in his best impression of the MInnesota Vikings Randy Moss for the
reception.
Except for the two
scoring plays in the final 90 seconds, the BHSU defense had held the Beavers
in check through most of the first half, something BHSU coach John Scott was
pleased with.
"I thought our
guys up front did a good job of holding their offense down and flying to the
football," Scott said. "They say bad things happen in threes and that
hit us right before the half."
Fielding showed signs
of achieving a comfort level in the second half, connecting with split end Brian
Erickson, who finished the game with five catches for 71 yards. Erickson had
three catches on the drive that led to MSU's final points of the game late in
the third quarter--a Marco Babic 20-yard field goal. The play was set up by
an interception by MSU safety Drew Wierson.
"We started off
slow, but our defense stayed strong and gave us time to get going," Erickson
said. "We were improved in all aspects of the game this week and it's great
to start the conference with a win."

MSU drops home opener
By: Mike Manston
Bemidji State University head football coach Jeff Tesch said Saturday's 48-0
victory over Minot State University at Herb Parker Stadium is the first time
in his BSU coaching tenure of eight years that the BSU Beavers' defense has
dictated the outcome of the game.
The BSU defense, which has given up only 10 points in its opening two games,
including a win last week over North Central Conference foe Minnesota State-Mankato,
pinched the Beavers.
Saturday's defensive performance was in stark contrast to the porous BSU defense
that allowed Minot State All-American quarterback Kenny Smith to roll up nearly
300 yards and four touchdowns in MSU's 35-28 win in 2002 at Bemidji.
What a difference a year makes.
Smith is gone and the Beavers, who had at least a four-way battle for the
trigger spot during fall practices, will enter this week's Dakota Athletic
Conference (DAC-10) opener next week at home against Black Hills State (S.D.)
with many unanswered questions.
"There's still a lot of competition for all of our starting spots,"
said MSU coach Mike Sivertson. "We will just keep shuffling the deck
until we find some combinations that can get the job done. But the story of
the game was we just had too many turnovers and you can't do that against
a good team like Bemidji (State). Kudos to them."
Sivertson was reluctant to point out even one thing he was pleased with in
the game. "I guess we punted the ball pretty well and covered punts well,
but we certainly don't want to major in that," he said. "We just
didn't do enough to win the football game. We were humbled and disppointed.
We never want to get good at losing and the challenge will be how we respond
from this."
Sophomore running back Neil Graham was likely the lone bright spot for MSU
as he rushed for a team-high 83 yards on 13 carries.
