This course will allow teachers to take the rationale, strategies and best practices covered in Introduction to Differentiated Instruction  to another level.  The class will focus on ways to manage the DI classroom as teachers assess and prescribe for student needs.  Strategies specific to meeting these needs and targeted standards will be addressed.  The intent is to expand on prior knowledge and implementation of DI principles.  Participants will move to a higher level of understanding on how to meet the needs of diverse learners.

The use of Love and Logic techniques lays the foundation for a positive learning climate for students and teachers.  Through logical consequences and caring actions; school can help develop citizens who monitor their own behaviors.  Based on natural consequences and decision making, this approach allows teachers to keep control of the classroom while empowering students.  Teachers will acquire knowledge and practice strategies designed to lead students to become self-sufficient, motivated and ready for the real world.

This course is designed to strengthen educators’ foundational knowledge of K-3 literacy.  The focus will be on research-based instructional strategies to teach the foundation of our language.  Educators will explore the alphabetic, pattern, and meaning layers of print through modeling and practice.

Advanced Online Research will explore basic and advanced searching methods for the ODIN catalog and available Online Library Resources.  This class is designed for school teachers and school library media specialists who have a basic familiarity with the online resources.  The resources being explored will have a practical application to your classroom instruction and provide your students with reliable information to use in research papers and other school work.  A minimum of ten participants is needed for each class.

Reading and the Brain Institute

This course will build knowledge of the reading process from both a neuroscience perspective and an educational perspective.  Basics of brain structure will be discussed and that information will be directly applied to understanding how information is processed during the reading process.  In addition, participants will explore key questions in the teaching of reading – the relationship between comprehension and decoding, the appropriate role of early childhood reading instruction, and the phenomenon of word and letter reversals when reading.

This course is for teachers in elementary and middle schools who have an interest in learning about the various habitats and their ecology.  The topics discussed will by types of biomes, animal life and adaptations, ecology, impact on environment, and survival.  The focus of this module will the deserts.
