NAC: 'Along the Viking Trail-From Iceland to Greenland'
(Lecture/Seminar/Conference)

Minot High School biology teacher Joe Super will present "Along the Viking Trail -- From Iceland to Greenland" as part of the Northwest Art Center Lecture Series Monday, April 7, at 7 p.m. in Aleshire Theater, Hartnett Hall.

Last July, Super sailed from Reykjavik, Iceland, around the tip of Greenland aboard the National Geographic Explorer as a participant in the Grosvenor Teacher Fellow program. The program, sponsored jointly by National Geographic and Lindblad Expeditions, provides field-based professional development in geographic education for K-12 educators from the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico.

Goals of last summer's trip were: to experience arctic natural phenomena; to follow the path of Eric the Red and other Viking explorers; and to learn about Greenland civilizations past and present.

"Greenland is such a stark but beautiful vista to contrast with the ocean and ice," Super said. "No other form of travel would allow a person to visit such isolated and wild places." Super said the voyage provided endless opportunities to experience the nature and history of the region. "With over 20 hours of daylight, sleep was the only limiting factor."

The program is named for Gilbert M. Grosvenor, Chairman Emeritus of the National Geographic Society and Education Foundation Board. Through the program, exemplary educators are recognized for their commitment to geographic education and are given the opportunity to be actively engaged in finding new ways to bring geographic awareness to their classrooms.

The lecture is free and open to the public. An informal reception will follow the program. Parking is unrestricted.

This project is supported in part by a grant from the North Dakota Council on the Arts, which receives funding from the state legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts.
