Mixed Ensemble "In C" Performance

Terry Riley's pioneering work, "In C" (1964), is one of the most important early contributions to the minimalist style of music. It is written for any number of musicians playing any instruments of their choosing. The piece is composed of 53 individually numbered measures, each to be repeated any number of times before proceeding on to the next, but held together by a common eighth-note C played for the duration of the piece. As the ensemble progresses through the work, the rhythmic and harmonic texture slowly morphs away from and then back to the key of C. Typical performances last between 1 and 2 hours; every trip through it is unique. "In C" was and is both experimental and outlandish, but at all times remains beautiful, hypnotic and serene. Heart rates will slow and the mind will move to a meditative state.

A mixed ensemble of MSU faculty and students and Minot community members will collaborate on a single performance of "In C" in Ann Nicole Nelson Hall on the Minot State University campus, Sunday, Feb. 24, at 7:30 p.m. This event is free and open to the public, and parking is unrestricted.
