All day: Art
Two very different approaches to portraiture share the gallery walls in "Face to Face," a photography exhibit by Minot State University senior art students Molly Kvigne and Katelyn Reiter. The exhibit runs July 9 through August 6, 2013, in the Northwest Art Center's Gordon B. Olson Library Gallery. The public is invited to an opening reception with the artists July 10 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the library gallery.

Kvigne, a Minot native, specializes in family portrait photography. Kvigne says she likes to spend time with her subjects, letting them get comfortable in front of the camera. "I want the love of the family or couple to shine through," said Kvigne. "Sincere portraits are my goal."

Surrey, N.D., photographer Reiter, on the other hand, uses her models as canvases, painting their faces and styling their hair in a "big or busy" way. Her portraits are intended as fashion statements, rather than as traditional views of her subjects.

The exhibition is presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements for a Bachelor's Degree in Art from Minot State University. Reiter graduated in May; Kvigne expects to complete her degree this fall. Examples of their work can be viewed online at www.mollyraephotography.com and www.katiereiter.com.

This project is funded in part by a grant from the North Dakota Council on the Arts, which receives funding from State Legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts. For more information about Northwest Art Center activities call 701-858-3264.

The gallery is open regular library hours. For hours, call 858-3200.

More information: http://www.minotstateu.edu/nac
8:00am: Art
A Trip Around the World," an exhibit of pastel-charcoal drawings by John S. Postovit, on display June 25 through July 25.

The public is invited to an opening reception with Postovit from 6:30 to 8 p.m., June 25 at the gallery.

A North Dakota native now living in California, Postovit is an avid traveler, and the images in his show were inspired by his visits to Italy, England, Bulgaria, Thailand, Australia and other locales. Not merely a travelogue, his large, intensely colorful compositions dance with what he terms "augmented reality." Colorful inner tubes and zeppelins surrealistically float through tourist-postcard landscapes that have been playfully cropped and boldly designed.

More information: http://www.minotstateu.edu/nac
