VITA Spring 2014

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) is an IRS-sponsored program that allows volunteer groups to provide free income tax preparation to the elderly, military personnel, and individuals and families who have low to moderate income levels.

Our campus provides this service through an accounting internship program that is offered each spring semester. To earn two credits, each student works ninety hours which includes rigorous training and certification. This program benefits the community by helping taxpayers who may not have the means to pay for a paid preparer or who may not file a tax return and then forfeit credits (such as the Earned Income Credit) that typically generate refunds for low income taxpayers.

This tax season, the MSU VITA group trained and worked a total of 450 hours and prepared tax returns for 71 clients with Earned Income Credits totaling $79,126 and tax refunds at $44,938. Their hard work and dedication also saved clients approximately $13,925 in tax preparer fees.
