Jan is a native of Ray, North Dakota. She taught secondary business education at Wolford High School for 23 years. She was a finalist for North Dakota Teacher of the Year in 1994, and was named 2005 North Dakota Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year.

She is a professional member of the National Business Education Association (NBEA), North Dakota Business and Office Education Association (NDBOEA), the National Education Association(NEA), North Dakota Education Association (NDEA), the Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE), and the Delta Kappa Gamma Lambda Chapter.

She and her husband, Charles (Chuck) have one daughter, Lydia.

She looks forward to sharing her passion for business education at Minot State University.
